Nursery school admissions kick off this week: What you need to know

With online registrations for nursery school admissions for academic session 2021-22 set to begin in Delhi from February 18, parents must be feeling some relief. Because of the pandemic, many had chosen not to apply for admissions for their children last year, probably assuming that the situation would be brought under control in a few months. But with the pandemic and lockdowns becoming prolonged affairs, many parents had become concerned about the consequences for their children’s’ education. “Most parents are now looking forward to the beginning of schooling for their children,” says K.V.S. Seshasai, CEO of the pre-K division of EuroKids International and Kangaroo Kids.

This year, for the first time, the admission process will be conducted online, as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Previously, parents had to physically visit schools to submit their application forms and to pay the registration fees. This is one hassle they will not have to face—as Yakshi Gulati, principal of the Heritage School in Rohini, Delhi, says, “With the entire process online, parents can submit their application forms and registration fees online. And as online registration is open through the day, parents can fill up forms and register as per their own convenience and availability.”

The admission process will start from February 18, with the last date for submission of application forms being March 4. The first list will be published on March 20 and second list on March 25. Schools say they already have robust online application systems in place for the entire process. Considering the delay in this process—admissions usually happen in November and December—the number of days allotted to complete the entire process has been reduced. Therefore, schools have put systems in place so that they can engage with parents and complete everything on time.

According to Seshasai, “Parent counselling will be done through video conferencing between February 22 and March 10, and we are set to resume our academic session from April 1.” For the benefit of parents whose children missed out on school last year, the school has introduced an online ‘bridge programme’ to help them catch up.

One note of caution is that since the admission process is online, parents need to be fully prepared with necessary pre-requisites—official documents and paperwork, etc—for that. For them, Gulati has a word of advice. “First-time parents filling up the forms should be careful to note the submission dates and timelines to avoid missing out on applying to the schools of their choice,” she says. They should also carefully follow the instructions in the application forms and be absolutely sure of the details and information they are filling in. They should also keep all basic documents such as their Aadhaar cards and their address proof ready for the process to be smooth and hassle-free.

With Covid-19 vaccine rollouts now beginning and cases on the decline, there are fair chances of pre-schools resuming physical classes in the upcoming academic session. Schools are preparing for that by designing SOPs and training their staff. “We have planned for a phased and systematic resumption, wherein students attend pre-schools for two days a week in the initial weeks and three days a week in next few weeks before we finally resume five days a week,” says Seshasai. However, pre-schools are also preparing for the eventuality that they are not allowed to open or are closed again because of unforeseen circumstance. In such a scenario, they plan to give parents the option of selecting online or offline learning modes for their children.
